Commercial Cardboard Collection changes

A proposal to stop commercial cardboard collections in selected shopping areas and town centres in Rodney, the North Shore and Waitakere is being considered.

Town centres in Rodney, the North Shore and Waitakere are being considered as the area's to stop the collections in, and is going for approval as part of Auckland Council’s Annual Budget process on Thursday 29 June.

Properties receiving this service do not pay anything extra for this. It is not offered anywhere else in Auckland and is subsidised by all Auckland ratepayers at a cost of $370,000 per year.

We are asking for your help to ensure our town centres stay clean and tidy. 

What this means:

If the proposal is approved, the last day we will collect commercial cardboard is Friday 28 July. After this date, businesses must find other ways to dispose of their cardboard.

Options include:

  • Domestic quantities of cardboard and paper can go in the Auckland Council recycling bin.
  • The ratepayer for the property can request to upgrade their existing 240 litre recycling bin to a 360 litre bin for no extra charge. Or they can request one additional 240 litre recycling bin at a cost of $62.01 per year. This cost is subject to approval within the annual budget.   • Commercial quantities of cardboard and paper from trade or business activities can be recycled using a private recycling operator. See below for company contact details.
  • Excess cardboard and paper can be dropped off at participating transfer stations and community recycling centres – accepted quantities and charges may vary. Visit and search ‘transfer stations’ or ‘community recycling centres’ to contact your nearest facility for more information.
  • Businesses or organisations with innovative waste minimisation ideas they wish to get off the ground may also be eligible for Waste Minimisation Innovation Fund (WMIF) grants. To find out more search ‘WMIF’ at
